Please enter your comments: I just got home from the American Legion National Convention that was held in San Antonio Texas and have to give the WW2 Legionnaries alot of credit for hanging in there all these years as there were more of them than those of us from the other wars. It is sad that they (WW2 Veterans) are leaving us at almost 1600 men and women a day world wide in deaths. My point here is that if the younger Veterans of this country don't start joining te Legions, VFW's and the DAV's we are not going to have any voice in Washington DC to save our VA Hospital's or our Benifit's. I know alot of people say they will not join because of the way they were treated when they came home, well I was treated the same way but I'am looking at the long end of it and these organizations are the only ones that Congress listens too and without the NUMBERS we do not stand a chance of maintaining these items I just mentioned. The Legion has about 2.8 million members and the VFW about 1.3 million members out of 27 million Veterans in this country. If you don't want to get active in these organizations thats fine BUT unless you start joining them we are going to really be in bad, bad shape in 10 more years. Like it or not THIS is the only way we stand a chance of keeping what we've got!!!!

What unit did you serve with? C 2/35th Inf.
When did you serve? 1968
Please enter your comments: Well, the 3rd Reunion of the 35th Infantry Regiment Association is now history but will remain in the minds of those who attended for a long time. It was great to see so many Cacti and their families come together for a weekend of friendship, camaraderie and remembrance. The Esprit' d Corps lives on in all Cacti from Orin Love, Anti-Tank Company, 1944-46 to PFC Scott Bennetch A 2/35th presently on Active Duty at Schofield Barracks and Enlisted Man of the Quarter. 1944-2001 the years covered by the 275 Cacti and Families. Wow. I would like to thank some people who represent the Cacti Spirit, people who gave of themselves at this reunion unselfishly. Pete Birrow, Organizer Extraordinaire, Al & Susan Olsen, Tom Mahon and Joan, Workerbees in the Hospitality Room, a great job. Joel & Kathy Luethjohann, great job on the Raffles. Joe & Martha Henderson, fantastic PX merchandise. Jim & Kay Anderson for hauling 90 pounds of history material for all to see.Jim Hall for organizing the mailing for personnel files to help find more Cacti. Joe Nemeth, taking orders for the really cool glasses and mugs with the Cacti and Unit logos on them, a great surprise. Richard & Nina Brouillette who had the display of Gear and Equipment on display so the families could see what we wore and carried.Charlie Marshall, our Chaplain who provides us with inspiration. All the Heavy Mortar Company men, 20 strong, who for many were seeing each other for the first time since Korea, 50 years ago. Our strac Color Guard, Jack Anderson, Jim Cooke, Jack Cuthrell, Don Blankin, Pete Birrow, Wiley Dodd, Joe Henderson, Tom Gragg & Roger Surprenant. Sean Haefli with his rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" brought tears to my eyes and filled my heart with pride. LTC Burt Thompson CO 2/35th with his inspiring speech, CSM Charlie Raper 2/35th a Soldier's Soldier. SGT Joshua Weisensel, HHC 2/35th,NCO of the Year, that says to me with men like this wearing the uniform today we can feel proud.

Please enter your comments: I'm a writer (Calling Crow, Flight of the Crow, Calling Crow Nation) and my novel about Vietnam, titled, Carl Melcher Goes to Vietnam, received a nice review in The Library Journal, a print publication that goes to libraries all over the country. I wanted to post that review here. Clayton, Paul Carl Melcher Goes To Vietnam Electric eBook Pub. http://www.electricebookpublishing.com In this fictional account of the Vietnam War, Clayton shuns drama and political issues, detailing instead the minutiae of one marine's experience. This approach assumes a preexisting understanding of the war. It also allows Clayton to concentrate on evoking the strange balance between the mundane and the unexpected, the routine and the horror that characterized service in Vietnam. The simple language reflects the identity of an uncertain youth drawn involuntarily into a new and unfamiliar world. As the story progresses, protagonist Carl Melcher develops his own ideology about the meaning and consequence of war, greatly shaped by his own experience as well as a growing knowledge of Eastern philosophy. Although it offers no new insight into the war, this novel does reveal Clayton, himself drafted in 1968, to be a reflective and strategic writer. Most notably, he has resisted the pacing of a best seller in order to portray more realistically the uneasy monotony of war, broken only by sudden bursts of unmotivated and unresolved action. The layout is manageable, although the text gets blurry at times--not the case with other formats, one hopes. Recommended where fiction on Vietnam circulates well. --Rebecca Bollen, Englewood, NJ

We are only 12 days and a wake-up from our 3rd Annual Reunion in Kansas City, August 23-26. At this time we have over 250 Cacti and guests registered and expect the final count to be right at 300. That will make our Cacti Reunion one of the largest Infantry Regiment Assn. Reunions in the country. It will also be larger than some Infantry Division Reunions. We have a lot of great activities planned and a lot of Free Time for socializing and getting reacquainted with the buddies you served with. I recently sent an Agenda and Information email out to all Cacti signed up and if you did not recieve it contact me for a copy. Come and be with your fellow Cacti. Ben Youmans

Please enter your comments: I am anxious to communicate with anyone who served with or knew my uncle Joseph W Dobler of Hq Co 3rd Bn 161st Regt of the 25th on Guadalcanal or New Georgia. Joe was KIA 3 Aug 43 at Munda while on patrol. I have been in contact with relatives of these vets who served with Joe: George South, Gene Bray, Tony Pister, and Loren (Spider) Webb. They have furnished info or photos for which I am very grateful. There were several other vets Joe mentioned in his letters, and I would like to hear from these people or their relatives: Mortensen from Spokane, O D Lancaster (from Idaho), John Knipper (of New York), Lebrand (sp?), St. Onge, and Wenzel. I also have borrowed from our local library the 6 Sep 43 issue of LIFE magazine which features action on New Georgia. The names of three people are mentioned, two of whom are on the cover. Of course, no outfits are mentioned. If interested, you may wish to check your libraries.
