Just a reminder to all those "Shake'n Bakes" like myself, or to let you know if you don't, of the NCOC Reunion that is scheduled for Sept. 27-30, 2000. It will be held in Columbus, GA. There is a lot of info. on their Web Site concerning the Reunion, as well as tons of info. on the entire NCOC program. It's well worth your time. It sounds like a well organized Reunion, and the organizers are trying to get as big a response and turnout as possible. If you are a "Shake'n Bake", or if you know someone that was, seriously consider attending. It should be a great time. I hope this is the right web addres...if not, I'll correct it. Name: Mike Moschkin Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Valrico , Fl Time: 2000-02-06 04:31:00 Comments: I'd like to comment on what Wallace Craig had to say. I believe what he is saying is true. We should not in our exuberance for McCain, take a blind eye to our own short comings and be to hasty to judge to swiftly upon others short comings as far as addictions or any foolishness of our youth be used to judge us to hastily.about who we are now,I support McCain because he is one of us, a veteran of a foreign adventure that alot of our fellow members of our generation did not wish to partake in. I my self have sinned in the direction of the young mister Bush, however that is not the reason I do not support him, I am for McCain because to me it would be a vindiction of us,those who did serve in the war zone. That no we are not all losers and cry babies, but, however veterans who served in a difficlt situation in the intrest of our country. WE are the Victorious ones ,those who are on the "Wall" did not die in vain, because the "Stars and Stripes" still fly and did not go the way of the hammer and sickle, all I can say is tell me who won, When our former enemies want our business today. Victory is sweet to me when ever it comes, for I've already paid for it. GO McCain !!!! He is after all a real Vietnam Veteran. |

Name: Wallace Craig Website: EGL Resources Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Midland, Texas Time: 2000-02-05 08:05:00 Comments: It pains me to read vehement statements from fellow veterans who have little insight into what they are writing about. George W. Bush lived in my hometown of Midland, Tx. for many years, I know the man personally. He and his family are some of the most genuine, public spirited people to be found. Whether he used cocaine in the past doesn't concern me today.I know that he has publically stated that he found alcohol was causing him problems in the past and therefore he quit drinking many years ago. Our last Governor, a tough, hard, fair woman was a proud member of Alcoholics Anonynous as am I. I nearly drank myself to death 8 years ago. Am I proud of that, hardly, am I proud of who I am today. You Bet. And actually, a better person for having almost lost it all and coming back to appreciate what is important in life. Many combat veterans I think understand that. To judge someone on what they might have done 30 years ago is foolish. Judge them on what they offer today. Otherwise I might not think so highly of McCain as I do, as reports from his Flight School say he should have flunked out, but didn't because his father, the Admiral pulled strings. I think that has very little to do with who he is today. |

Name: Walt McDonald Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Akron, Ohio Time: 2000-02-04 18:33:00 Comments: McCain for President!!! Brothers, we need to help McCain! About G.W Bush: Bush doesn't like to talk about cocaine. Apparently he had a little drug problem when he was young. If he can't talk about drugs now, whats he going to do if he's elected? Will he talk about drugs then? What will he say? Will he pardon everyone else who's in jail for doing the same thing he got away with? Will he stand up to the Columbian drug lords? What will he tell our children about cocaine? Will he say " don't do coke or you'll end up in jail or in the White House! ( will he give new meaning to " White" House? Cocaine is nothing new to the Bush family. President Bush imported crack cocaine through the CIA to buy guns for the Contra rebels. I feel that if the Republican Party chooses Dubbya over the other republican candidates, none of whom use cocaine, then what does that say about Republicans? Bush uses Religion to support his lies, ie, I won't raise taxes, I swear to God! Come on folks, wake up! We don't need some jerk like Dubbya in the White House. He isn't smart enough! After all he barely had a C average in college! Nuff said for now. Use your own conscience! I support John McCain, one of our own. Walt McDonald Golden Dragon A/1/14 1965-1966 |

Many might qualify to be a damned good presidentbut there are many other qualities to be considered. Lets not consider ones military service, no matter how dedicated and distinguished to be the only criteria for picking a new president. Lets not discredit the rear are MF"sbecause they were most likely draftees and did what they were told like everyone else. Every job (well most) wasimportant to the effort. In fact, I knew a few hero types I wouln't trust with my wife or kids. |

As far as comparing to the other candidates I will leave it up to you what you think. Whether you are Democrat, Republican or Independent let's get behind John McCain and give him a chance to see what he can do. I am not just talking about benefits for veterans, but what he can bring in the way of experience to our country. There is something about this man that is a lot more than TV hype and slick advertising. He has a look in his eye that words can not describe. If he doesn't perform, then we can always make a change and do something else. Give this VET a chance and see what happens. Tired of the government always cutting VA money? Tired of seeing your present day military brothers living on food stamps and trying to do there jobs with worn out equipment? Then it is time for us veterans to get off our duffs and start campaigning for a man that will take care of us in the future. We need to support one of our own, a veteran. We need to support John McCain for President. I can't see veterans voting for the likes of Bush, who cowarded behind the Texas national guard during the Vietnam war. Or Gore who did 6 months in Nam sleeping in a nice air conditioned hootch with his personal body guards. We need to put a man in the White House that will restore our proud military not take away from it. Two of our eight infantry divisions are rated C-4, unfit for combat, the other six are at C-2, which means they have problems. None of the Army's divisions are at C-1, where they should be. John McCain would change that. If it doesn't get taken care of then our Great Country that us Vets have fought for is in danger. Lets stand up and support one of our " OWN"! McCain 2000 Thanks for your time Walt McDonald Co A 1st Bn 14th Inf 25th Div April 1965- Dec 1966 GOLDEN DRAGONS |

Who in the hell does Burkett think he is! This is what I was really afraid was going to happen the book has gone to his head and now he's attacking real vets. I don't know about you guys but according to Bowman Amazon.com won't put his letter on the internet sounds like some of the bull shit we put up with in Nam. I think we all need to get together and do a few book reviews for Burkett and let him know how we feel about all of this. If you read his book it sounds good but since the public doesn't know whats happening they are beggining to connect every vet with fake PTSD claims etc. As far as I'm concerned I could give a damm about them the Goverment deserves everything it gets after what they did to us in Vietnam. So I'm asking everyone of you and that includes the grunts, jar heads, fly boys, chopper jocks, squids, and anyone who has received incoming fire or sweated out a mortor attack to join together and go over to amazon.com and post review on B G Burkett's book Stolen Valor or Eric Bergerud's book Red Thunder Tropic Lighting. They may not post our reviews like they did to Bowman but the'll know we are pissed. This guy needs to be put in his place if not it will be like when we returned home thirty years ago and you all know what that was like. God Bless all and lets make a response. |

I was pissed off before, but now I'm outraged about this asshole REMF is affecting good grunts to the poinnt of fury, if he is smart he'll stick to attacking his fellow REMFs and stay away from the Infantry we do our own house keeping, we know bullshit when we hear it, yea we also may embellish our stories alittle but we make an allowance for each others stories because we know the truth is right there, as we can feel each other's stories and relate to them in the back of our heads and in our hearts, "Brother Bowman". sincerely your Wolfhound Brother Mike Moschkin don't let the likes of a REMF like this guy screw up your life by intruding in yours. |

Name: William Thomas Website: In response to Mr. Bowman's letter Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Ohio Time: 2000-01-29 20:32:00 Comments: Let me begin by saying Mr. Bowman or Bowman as I knew him probably doesn't even remember me. I came to the 4/9th after he had already been there for about seven or eight months. I wasn't there when he had his helmet shot off his head but I heard the story. We all thought he was a little crazy and we always said it was from the head wound. There were guys in the platoon who were taking bets to see if he would live though his tour duty. Aside from all of that I will say if there was a man you wanted to walk point, run a tunnel, or go on patrol with it was him. As for awards "it didn't mean nothing". Bowman just did his job and I think he did it well. As for Mr. Burkett well, SHAME ON YOU! Proud to have served with the 25th, Manchu |

Name: Ken Blakely Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Time: 2000-01-29 19:51:00 Comments: This is the old Doc DCo. 2/12th and would like to respond to the two previous entrys as well. My awards and decorations lay in a box for years until my wife dug them up and dusted them off a few years ago. They were cheapened by the fact that there were folks in the rear who controlled them. They are now meaningful to my children. I know heroic men far braver than I who didn't receive any medals and others who were put in for medals and someone didn't follow up or paperwork lost. I remember in Dau Tieng one evening someone came to the aid station and wanted a medic to put an officer in for a purple heart. I asked if he had been wounded in combat and they said no he had skinned his shin getting in the chopper. A lifer put him in to win brownies and I'm sure he got his medal. That is no way an implacation that all lifers were self serving. I was wounded three times, received one purple heart. I did not put myself in for any. I did later ask to have the second issued because of the impact that it had on my family. The response was a medic could have done the paperwork and more or less I was stupid for not being self serving. Lt.Mike Christenson was put in for a DSC. He never got it. Sgt. David Peterson, Willie Hunter,Lt. Andy Farris Put in For Silver Stars, never received them, Johnny Olarain and Tom Churchill and David Peterson put in for Bronze Stars with V device, Never got them. Churchill was wounded badly enough to be sent to the USA and never got a Purple Heart for those wounds. Yes. Medals are a way of saying thanks and most likely mean more to our families. But how some one could place themselves in a judgment seat saying who deserved or who didn't at this point in time is a disgrace to the armed forces. I had a most memorable reunion in LAs Vegas Nevada in Oct. of 99. My Battalion Commander, then Lt. Col. Dean Tice and now retired Lt. General Dean Tice, said how saddened he was that men who were written up for medals did not receive them. Also how many who were put in for higher medals were dowgraded to the next lower.Dale Wrightson laid fire down while I tended wounded in Hoc Mon March 68. He lost his eye trying to save us. He got nothing, how I wish we could correct these injustices. Keep the faith. The most heroic men were those I served with in the bush, medals or not. Many heroic deeds were not witnessed by others than the wounded and those who died and the one who was left alive with the memory.I apologize to all who were wounded and didn't receive purple hearts because we ran out of tags or for what ever reason. My most serious wounds have been not from the physical but the mental wounds. God Bless you all. Doc |

I was with 1/5 (Mech) Aug '69 to Aug '70. I want to say to Mr Bowman that I support and agree with you 100%. Wounds, bravery and outstanding work did not always result in awards nor do awards always mean what they're supposed to. I felt at the time that awards were pretty meaningless. Friends were dying, lives were ruined, we were trying to do our jobs and survive to go home to the world. Mutual support and survival were real issues to deal with on a daily basis. Compared to that reality, a few trinkets and pieces of paper don't mean nothin'. People that haven't lived it, probably could not understand how that feels. |

Name: C W Bowman Website: Lets get the facts stright Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Time: 2000-01-29 14:08:00 Comments: Dear Sir,My name is C W Bowman I served with the 4/9th, Manchu's in 1967, under Captian Smith, and Lt Sargent who later was awarded the CMH. As many of you know Eric Bergerud wrote the book Red Thunder Tropic Lighting. In this book I speak of a head wound I received while fighting in the Pineapple Plantation. No where in the story did I mention that I received the Purple Heart for this wound. Now Mr Burkett who has written a book Stolen Valor has attacked me for not having the award. I've tryed 5 times to post a letter to Mr. Burkett on amazon.com but for some reason they will not post it. I wish to post it here because I will not let any one person try to tarnish the history of the 25th Infantry Division.Dear Mr. BurkettLet me begin by saying I think your a very dangerous person. I say this because you have written a book (Stolen Valor) about people who claim they are vets and are not , vets who claim awards they didn't receive, etc. NOW YOU ATTACK ME FOR AN AWARD (PURPLE HEART) I DIDN'T RECEIVE. The only conclusion I can come to is that your rational is , if I didn't receive this award then I must be lying. Mr. Burkett since you were never in the field and I think other combat vets will support me on this. There were many brave men who performed heroic acts and received minor wounds that never received awards. We felt we were just doing our jobs helping each other to stay alive and return home to our loved ones. The other reason we didn't put much stock in awards and you seemed to have left it out of your book, and that was the ticket punchers. As you know this was a group of people who handed out awards to each other to enhance their careers. So to us the awards were tarnished and didn't mean much., The joke in the field was " one dollar and all your awards will buy you a cup of coffee" The remark you or your friend placed on the internet about Eric and myself is a completely different story than what I got from Eric. To my understanding you called Eric and broad sided him with threats to discredit his book (Red Thunder Tropic Lighting) and myself. Eric offered to take your phone number so I could contact you and explain why I didn't have the Purple Heart on my records. Instead you refused and again asked for my phone number, my only guess was so you could broad side me. After talking to Eric and sharing this information with my wife and family , my wife became frighten. She told me to be careful because you never know what a person like this will try to do. Mr. Burkett you frightened my wife and family and I won't allow that. To protect myself from people like you I gathered up my offical military records and sent them off to Washington, DC to let them deceide if I derserved the Purple Heart. Guess what Mr. Burkett, Washington did in fact deceide I derserved the Purple Heart and it has now been placed in my official military records. I guess it was the little fact in my medical records that said, "treated for gun shot wound to the head".I guess now Mr. Burkett the question is where is your creditability? You accused Eric of not doing his research and getting the facts. Where was your research Mr. Burkett? Will I suffer future attacks from you for proving you wrong? I hope not Mr. Burkett. If you or your friend would like to send apologies to Eric and I, it would only be fitting to do so on the internet after all that's where you attacked not only us but all combat veterns who have a story to tell and don't have an award to back it up. I'll end this now hoping to never to hear from you again. I can only wonder why you have so much anger towards combat veterns. Good by Mr. BurkettCWTo the Division.Thank you for allowing me to post this letter. Keep Up The Fire! |
