Please enter your comments: I drove Lead APC for Co A 4/23rd Mech, APC Number 22. I hit a mine on January 8, 1968 losing my left arm and leg. I am working on a book titled "Wings On Fire." If you go to Google.com and type in Jon Hovde, you can read a five part front page story on "OUR" story. It was printed on the front pages St. Paul Pioneer Press in November 1998. It is Our story because it is a positive story about Vietnam, about finding folks from Vietnam who helped all of us return home. Welcome Home and Happy New Year "Tomahawks" and all others who served this greatest nation so well. Jon Hovde

Please enter your comments: "I Was Only Nineteen" Mum and Dad and Denny saw the passing out parade at Puckapunyal The 6th battalion was the next to tour and It was me who drew the card. We did Canungra and Shoalwater before we left. And Townsville lined the footpath as we marched down to the quay. This clipping from the paper shows us young and strong and clean. And there's me in my slouch hat with my SLR and greens. God help me, I was only nineteen. From Vung Tau riding Chinooks to the dust at Nui Dat, I'd been in and out of choppers now for months. But we made our tents a home. V.B. and pinups on the lockers, And an Asian orange sunset through the scrub. And can you tell me, doctor, why I still can't get to sleep? And night time's a jungle dark and a barking M.16? And what's this rash that comes and goes, can you tell me what it means? God help me, I was only nineteen. A four week operation, each step can mean your last one on two legs: it was a war within yourself. But you wouldn't let your mates down 'til they had you dusted off, So you closed your eyes and thought about somethin else. Then someone yelled out "Contact"', and the bloke behind me swore. We hooked in there for hours, then a God almighty roar. Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon. God help me, he was going home in June. And I can still see Frankie, drinking tinnies in the Grand On a thirty-six hour rec. leave in Vung Tau. And I can still hear Frankie, lying screaming in the mud. 'Till the morphine came and killed the bloody row. And the Anzac legends didn't mention mud and blood and tears. And stories that my father told me never seemed quite real I caught some pieces In my back that I didn't even feel. God help me, I was only nineteen. And can you tell me, doctor, why I still can't get to sleep? And why the Channel Seven chopper chills me to my feet? And what's this rash that comes and goes, can you tell me what it means? God help me, I was only nineteen

Same goes for the Guestbook here and on the 22nd Regiment site. Makes me wonder if I dreamed it all. Just sitting here remembering Christmas Eve 1969. Twas a moonlit night about 1000 meters outside of FSB Crook. Watched the guys at Crook send up multicolored star cluster flares (they tore white, red, and green ones apart and combined the ingredients to launch "Christmas colors". It is my sincerest wish that all 2nd Platoon Charlie Company 3/22nd Regulars, as well as all Vietnam Vets have a safe and happy Holiday season.

What unit did you serve with? HEADQUARTERS BATTERY, 11 FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE
When did you serve? FEBRUARY 1, 1940--MAY 29, 1945
Please enter your comments: During World War II,I was a sergeant in HEADQUARTERS BATTERY, 11TH FIELD ARTILLERY BRIDGADE, 25TH INFANTRY DIV. THE COMMANDING OFFICER WAS CAPTAIN NISHA N. KADICK. It was on NEW GEORGIA ISLAND 1943, our third battle in the South Pacific that the commanding officer asked for volunteers to help lay a communication telephone line to one of our subordinate artillery units, I was one of those soldier volunteers. In our instructions, the selected route taken could be hostile with Japanese snipers in the area. There would be no smoking or matches on our person. However, chewing tobacco was available. All identification was removed from the body. For my part in this hostile mission I was to be presented the Bronze Star Medal. Apparently, this was overlooked as the result of our fast-moving headquarters and trying to win a war. My wife and daughter urged me to seek this award. Does anyone remember this? Does anyone have record of this mission in our unit history or subordinate artillery units? If my history can be reconstructed,(St. Louis fire),then I will receive my Bronze Star Medal. Thank you.

Please enter your comments: "Often times I sit back to relax after day's work or when someone I know has been killed or badly wounded in action and I imagine to myself how his parents and wife take it. Concerning my wound, it was nothing at all. I simply got shot in the other knee. It's a very small wound. I rested for three or four days and went right back into the woods and rice paddies. So no sweat. I wanted to tell you about it before the Army did because I realize what a feeling you must experience when you see the guy approaching the house. You never know what they are going to tell you. I just can picture how his family will take the news real badly. I still say, though I am glad I came to V.N., I appreciate life a lot more now. It's the same feeling a poverty stricken family would experience if they were given things that they themselves could never buy. Give a family that has lived on very little food all their lives or one that had no choice but to eat poor quality food, a dinner of their choice, and you will see how much they appreciate it. That's how it is with me and a lot of guys here. I found out yesterday I will be coming home for R&R on June 4, I'll leave about the 9th or 10th. I'll be home for about five or six days. I'm sorry I haven't written home in such a long time. In the last month or so my company has been spending a lot of nights out in the woods and rice paddies. During the day we search out predetermined areas where the enemy is suspected of hiding, then for a few hours we rest until darkness has fallen at which time we move out to our ambush site. Here we dig our foxholes for the night. Early the next morning, we are up and at it again. We usually go out three to six days at a time. Time has gone by pretty fast here. Only six more months to go. We haven't seen much action for a while now. Since the Tet-Offensive came to an end things have been real quite. I use to carry the platoon radio up 'til three weeks ago when I was called u

Please enter your comments: Had alot of good times on the rock,I will never forget the four mile runs so early in the mornings. And all our great camping trips to east range, even our summer vacations to the big island. The smell of all the flowers, the sugar cane fields burning. Climbing the cocanut trees outside our orderly room trying to reach the prize located at the top. Going down to the shack in the middle of B quad, and getting a cold Oly (or Primo depending on if the eagle has flown). I wish I was back 23 years old, young and dumb. They were some of the best times of my life. Ha Butch, lets go skateboarding
